This is the opening track from Transition, the second album by Washington D.C. R&B singer-songwriter and producer, Ryan Leslie. The disc was inspired by “a summer of secret love” with a mystery woman, whom Leslie met during a rehearsal for his showcase at New York’s S.O.B.’s. Each song on Transition tells the story of their relationship. Leslie told Global Grind that on this song, “I was so into her I couldn’t imagine her being with someone else. My mind started to play tricks on me.” (source songfacts)

Short People
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin’ peep, peep, peep

No Diggity
Getting paid is a forte
Each and every day, true player way
She got tricks in the stash
Stacking up the cash
Fast when it comes to the gas
By no means average

In a 1994 interview with the Los Angeles Time, Eddie Vedder said: “It is about a relationship but not between two people. It’s more one person’s relationship with a million people. In fact, that song’s almost a little too obvious for me. That’s why instead of a lyric sheet we put in an X-ray of my teeth from last January and they are all in very bad shape, which was analogous to my head at the time.”
Corduroy
The waiting drove me mad…
You’re finally here and I’m a mess.
I take your entrance back -
Can’t let you roam inside my head.
I don’t want to take what you can give
I would rather starve than eat your bread.
I would rather run but I can’t walk
Guess I’ll lie alone just like before.
I’ll take the varmint’s path
Oh and I must refuse your test
A-push me and I will resist
This behavior’s not unique.
I don’t want to hear from those who know
They can buy, but can’t put on my clothes.
I don’t want to limp for them to walk
Never would have known of me before.
I don’t want to be held in your debt.
I’ll pay it off in blood, let I be wed
I’m already cut up and half dead
I’ll end up alone like I began.
Everything has chains, absolutely nothing’s changed.
Take my hand, not my picture, spilled my tincture.
I don’t want to take what you can give
I would rather starve than eat your breast
All the things that others want for me
Can’t buy what I want because it’s free
Can’t buy what I want because it’s free
Can’t be what you want because I’m…
I ain’t s’posed to be just fun
Oh, to live and die, let it be done.
I figure I’ll be damned - all alone like I began…
It’s your move now…
I thought you were a friend, but I guess I, I guess I hate you …

W o r l d w i d e C h o p p e r s packs more rhythmic, rapid-fire syllables than a month of Sundays at your local Pentecostal church. Even, better, they all (I’m pretty sure) form actual English words. A standout cut off the Strange Music emcee’s 14th album, this joint finds Michael “Seven” Summers serving up a grinding, rock-infused backdrop for the voluminous verbiage of (in no particular order) Tech, Busta Rhymes, Twista, Ceza, JL B.Hood, Yelawolf, Uso, D-Loc and Twisted Insane. While I have to hand it to Yela for his creative subject matter (pogo stick assaults, Jehovah’s witnesses and streaking all figure into his bars), and Busta for his dope use of stuttering, I’ll leave it to readers to issue the final verdict on who came the hardest. Whatever your opinion, though, be sure to keep it locked for the latest tunes leading up to the June 7, release of Tech N9ne’s All 6’s and 7’s LP.

Happy Birthday To Me (Feb.15) | Bright Eyes
All eyes on the calendar
Another year I claim of total indifference
To here, the days pile up
With decisions to be made, I’m sure all of them were wrong
Into this song I send myself
And with these drinks I plan to collapse
And forget this wasted year, these wasted years
Devoted friends, they disappear
And I’m sorry about the phone call and needing you
Some decisions you don’t make
I guess it’s just like breathing or not wanting to
There are some things you can’t fake
I guess that it’s typical
To cling to memories you’ll never get back again
And to sort through old photographs
Of a summer long ago or a friend that you used to know
And there below
His frozen face
You wrote the name and that ancient date, that ancient date
And you can’t believe that he’s really gone
When all that’s left is a fucking song and
I’m sorry about the phone call; and waking you.
I know that it is late,
But thank you for talking, because I needed to.
Some things just can’t wait.

Without A Word
Hey you can tell the world
That you’re leaving
And you can pack your bags
And spread your wings
And you can tell them all
That it’s over
But while you wave goodbye
I’ll be getting closer
Stand there and look into my eyes
And tell me that all we had were lies
Show me that to you it don’t count
And I’ll stand here if you prefer
Yes I’ll leave you without a word
Without a word
And you can tell the world
That you’re tired
But your excuses, they won’t work
‘Cause I’ll know that you’re lying
Every time that I see your face
I notice all the suffering
Just turn to my embrace
I won’t let you come to nothing
Stand there and look into my eyes
And tell me that all we had were lies
Show me that to you it don’t count
And I’ll stand here if you prefer
Yes I’ll leave you without a word
Without a word

That’s My Bitch | Kanye West & Jay-Z f. Elly Jackson of La Roux
If this is what we can expect from Kanye and Jay’s Watch The Throne, we’re torn. Nice “Apache” sample by producer Q-Tip, lots of bluster and some decent lines, but in the end, not nearly as much substance as one might expect from THE WORLD’S GREATEST LIVING ARTIST and the Chief Potentate of New York City. What do people really want from this album anyway? Something along the lines of “Devil In A New Dress,” “The Joy,” “Shiny Suit Theory,” something better than Lloyd Banks’ album? Kanye gave thou the magnificence already, maybe this should get back to grassroots.
